Worldchat: Generation 7080

7080: Worldchat/Intercultural Dialogue: The future of money Worldchat which will take place at Wyspa IS on 22th of June is a part of
project Generation 7080 ( www.generatie7080.nl ) a programme serial made by Menno van der Veen (programme maker de Balie) and held in cultural-political centre De Balie, Amsterdam www.debalie.nl, examines the moral standpoints of people born between 1970 and 1989 (7080). What kind of labels indicates the generation 7080? ‘Patat’generation, Generation discharge, Generation Zero, Generation X, back seat generation? And how does the generation 7080 thinks from his perspective about problems of the present time. The event is accessible for everyone in the host country and contains elements of the ‘state of the art’ underground (dance) music and performances (like vj’s, poetry, stand up comedian, sing and song writers, folk music, spoken word). The idea behind this is that various groups of people meet each other. During the event people have access to ‘chat’ with cultural elite about various upfront-defined issues.

More details:

World chat contains two elements, namely ‘chat’ and an ‘event’.

Event
The event is accessible for everyone in the host country (for example everyone in Budapest) and contains elements of the ‘state of the art’ underground (dance) music and performances (like vj’s, poetry, stand up comedian, sing and song writers, folk music, spoken word). The idea behind this is that various groups of people meet each other.

‘Chat’
During the event people have access to ‘chat’ with cultural elite about various upfront-defined issues. In total 160 people will be able to talk with 40 ‘chat’ guest. The ‘chat’ guests discuss from their home computer.

People choose the ‘chat’ guest based upon the thematically statement of the various ‘chat’ guests. These statements are three weeks before the events starts, accessible on the website of Generation 7080, and will also be emailed to the various digital networks of the main organisation and the host organisations. People who receive the list of statements of the various ‘chat’ guest will let the main organisation (Amsterdam, de balie, organisation of programme 7080) know with whom they want to ‘chat’ with. All discussion will have a maximum of one hour, and are digital moderated.

The themes can vary and will be defined with the host and the main organisation.

Result
The event will be visible at home computers through life streaming. So: this way the chatters not only get knowledge of other angles concerning universal topic, but they also will have knowledge of the local culture of the host city.
The computers at the event will be placed in a separate room where they can also see what happens in the other rooms.

Who?
We focus on the cultural 'elite' by which we mean students, artists, scientist, politicians, philosophers, writers, managers, leaders, business people, people who work independent, critics, journalist etc. This does not mean that we want to exclude the average human being, but we have to focus on people who want to make changes and differences, and are willing and able to fight for this. And most of the times the cultural elite has a vision. The elite in itself does not necessary have a vision. But the cultural elite does.

General chatroom In the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the predominant ideology of the western world became neo-liberalism. Today, only a capitalist system that focuses at efficiency and profits is left. Discussions are not about socialism or capitalism etc. but mostly about how many ‘social’ features we can incorporate in the system.

- What does money mean for generation 7080?
- Has the strength and dominance of money become an even more important factor in global society? If so, how? If not, why not?
- Do we need to stop the predominance of money or would the world be a better place if it only existed of calculating citizens?
- How would the world look like if we should not have a dominant economic system which evolves around money? (Architecture, social relationships, infrastructure, economic structure, clothes, hypes, media power etc.)

Chatroom 1: intrinsic value
- What does money mean to you (artists meet traders)
- Is the addiction to money a ‘western disease’ that causes the world to suffer?

Chatroom 2: imagine a world without money
- Would we will be better of in a world without money? How does a world without money look like?

Chatroom 3: Fears and criticisms
- Suppose the dollar falls and the system collapses.
- The worldbank and the imf
- China and Africa

Chatroom 4: Alternative systems - Hosted by London School of Economics
- German local alternative (FreudenMark)
- Other theories on how money works
- Dutch system that is called ‘noppes’
