RES PUBLICA NOWA PROJECT

PROJECT DESCRIPT
ION

"DNA miasta" (City DNA; www.dnamiasta.pl) is a series of public debates and creative workshops organized by the quarterly "Res Publica Nowa".  It aims at creating a platform for multidisciplinary dialog on city culture between citizens, media and politicians. An intellectual debate and workshops proposing solutions to existing problems are ran in each of the participating cities. In order to stimulate and diversify the debates, guests from other cities and foreign countries are invited. Internet discussion groups, broad media involvement and support of many local partners are at the essence of each event. The process is recreated in all of the involved municipalities in order to address more specific topics.

DEBATE IN GDANSK - 24.10.2009
Topic: Gdańsk – a city of icons?

Debate panelists:
Mats Stjernstedt - Director of Index - INDEX - the Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation
Kuba Szreder - curator and initiator of project involving art, knowledge and social critique
Aneta Szyłak - curator and art critic, director of the Wyspa Institute for Art in Gdańsk

Panelists are to give their insights on the potential for decoding universal symbols
of freedom, solidarity or cultural heritage of Gdansk in order to give them meaning and relevance in the future. An open discussion with the audients’ participation aimed at defining perspectives will be held between the panel and group workshops.

Description: Gdańsk is well known in Poland and abroad for slogans, motives and symbols rooted in its recent history. Dockyards, Solidarność and Lech Wałęsa have become ambiguous. Our intention is to discuss the potential for reinterpretation of these largely universal symbols. Which could foster the city’s culture and which have negative connotations? What are the challenges for the artists and intellectuals interested in decoding the city in the next decade? Does Gdańsk offer freedom of culture or culture of freedom?

Date and venue: 10:30-18:00 CET, Wyspa Institute of Art, Gdańsk
