Knutte Wester 01/02 2008

Knutte Wester graduated from the Masters program at the Academy of Fine Arts in Umea in 2003. The same year got some national acknowledgement for his art project “Gold Street 8”, which was an open studio for refugees. His film about that project, ’Down Gold Street’, was co-produced by the Swedish Television and was nominated to Prix Europe in Berlin 2005. The last years he has participated in a number of group shows in Stockholm, Riga, Gothenburg, Umea, Tirana, and Johannesburg. The last years he has had solo shows at Roda Sten, (Gothenburg) Vasterbottensmuseet (Umea) and Museum of national history, Tirana, Albania. Wester has received a number of grants including residence programs by IASPIS (International Artist Studio Program In Sweden.) NIFCA (Nordic institution for contemporary art), SIDA and two working grants from the Arts Grants Committee in Sweden.

Knutte Wester’s artistic work deals with issues concerning social power structures, history and participation. In a way his work is always “documentary” though the medium for this varies betveen video, sculpture, installations and social projects.
