The Repair Departament / ISW 29 February 2008

In the last few years, the Shipyard has become the most recognisable place embracing the Gdańsk artistic scene. The variety of the attitudes and discourses intersecting here provokes references and authorial commentaries, which is why the Shipyard map includes a multiplicity of artistic strategies. The devastated brick production buildings and the deserted streets have become protagonists in films, they are photographed and serve as the scenery for theatrical productions, while the industrial noises have been utilised by many a musician. Here you will find many creative people working – painters, sculptors, multi-media artists, street-artists, actors, performers and musicians. The Shipyard is the symbol of freedom – for artists, however, independence is not just symbolic here, it is also tangible. The workshops have a “squat” nature – they are so isolated, however, that they do not disturb anyone and those who know where they are going can easily get to the right place.
The future of the Shipyard is becoming ever clearer and in your mind’s eye you can already see the contemporary architecture. We need mutual dialogue, however, which will become the starting-point for the construction of a truly pluralistic community in the Young Town. Artists have already proved themselves with their work of revitalising the post-industrial areas in other cities around the world. Art causes the social perception of districts to change and the artists introduce a new energy, new ideas and inestimable potential into the life of the city. They also create a record of this place. It is through their eyes that future generations will look at the Shipyard.
So far, the artistic community in the Shipyard has not aimed at consolidation. Now, however, with the awareness of the growing role of art in the battle for the future of the new riverside district, it is ready to act together. We have to create a common platform for talk and action, which will allow us to remain an important factor shaping the Young Town. Revitalisation, i.e. the complex process of renewing the urbanised space, does not depend solely on repairing the historic buildings and building new ones. It is a process of healing the urban space and restoring it to life and the artists are taking – and will continue to take – an active part in this process!
The Wyspa Art Institute is located on the former grounds of Gdańsk Shipyard and with its programme it undertakes themes directly connected with the site, its history and also its planned future. The exhibition is intended to accumulate and display all the artistic attitudes – often so very different from one another – and not just to limit itself to the so-called visual arts. We want this one place to be the meeting-ground for all the creative personalities connected with the Shipyard, the residents of all the places of art dispersed so widely around the Shipyard, including the building of the Telephone Exchange known as the “Artists’ Colony”, the Znak Theatre, the Aku Gallery, the Pattern Room and the Wyspa Art Institute.
