The San Francisco Art Institute's Bachelor of Fine Arts, Post-Baccalaureate (PB), Master of Fine Arts (full-time), and Low-residency Summer Master of Fine Arts programs in the School of Studio Practice are currently accepting applications: the BFA, PB, and MFA programs for both the spring and fall of 2009, and the Low-residency Summer MFA program for the summer of 2009. A constant on the world stage of contemporary global art for nearly 140 years, SFAI's School of Studio Practice comprises seven exceptional areas of study:

Focused on innovative education in the arts, SFAI's principal goal is to make it possible for each student, at every level, to develop into an outstanding artist. The School of Studio Practice provides a contemporary, critically informed, interdisciplinary global education. Under the guidance of its accomplished faculty, the School of Studio Practice avails its students of manifold open environments in which to seamlessly shift from critical reflection to hands-on application (and back), from dialogue and critique to revision and transformation. Working across artistic disciplines and genres, the School of Studio Practice consistently confirms a basic SFAI conviction: the accomplished artist is an intensely engaged, sharp-thinking, problem-solving, ethically and politically informed global citizen who, at one and the same time, is deeply absorbed in and devoted to formal, historical, and technical concerns. Together with some of the most influential and extraordinary artists, scholars, theorists, critics, and curators, students learn in an environment of small classes, tutorials, colloquia, seminars, and intensive field research.

SFAI's alumni comprise some of the most widely recognized artists of our time, including Miguel Calderón, Enrique Chagoya, Richard Diebenkorn, Toba Khedoori, Tony Labat (SFMOMA), Annie Leibovitz (SF Legion of Honor retrospective), Sharon Lockhart, Paul McCarthy, Barry McGee, Cathy Opie (Guggenheim Museum retrospective), Paul Pfeiffer, Jason Rhoades, Larry Sultan, Kehinde Wiley (Studio Museum of Harlem exhibition), and Aaron Young.

Essential to SFAI's curriculum is the interaction between students and a wide array of visiting artists and scholars who come to lecture and teach each semester. Along with the Graduate Lecture Series—Spheres of Interest: Experiments in Thinking & Action—the Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series fosters open forums through which students are given direct access to the major practitioners and theorists of contemporary global art and culture. Fall 2008 lecturers include, among many others, Guy Tillim, Ou Ning, Marilyn Minter, Chris Ofili, Martha Rosler, Josephine Taylor (alumna), Shirley Tse, Bik Van der Pol, Kurt Kauper, Ben Kinmont, Steve Kurtz, Mary Kelly, Société Réaliste, and Bruce Yonemoto (for details, please go to www.sfai.edu/vas  and www.sfai.edu/spheres.

Recent figures from both series include Jem Cohen, Andrea Bowers, Didier Faustino, Tony Oursler, Hoy Cheong Wong, Judith Barry, Anthony McCall, Judith Hopf, Carsten Nicolai, Kerry James Marshall, Liz Larner, Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla, Amy Sillman, Iona Rozeal Brown (alumna), Patty Chang and David Kelley, Julie Mehretu, Choi Jeong-Hwa, John Lovett and Alessandro Codagnone, Camille Norment, Florian Hecker and Chris Watson, Dont Rhine, Jens Haaning, David Reed, Jill Magid, James Mackay, Stan Douglas, Kader Attia, Lari Pittman, Adel Abdessemed, Martin Creed, Emory Douglas, Kimsooja, Annie Leibovitz (alumna), Thomas Demand, John Miller, Christian Philipp Müller, Tony Cokes, Phil Niblock, Florian Zeyfang, Laura Harris, Sowon Kwon, and Teddy Cruz and Pedro Reyes (whose joint exhibition, Conflict Resolution, is on view through December 13, 2008 in the Walter and McBean Galleries on the SFAI campus; for details, please go to www.sf ai.edu/current.

Inventive, inquisitive students from the broadest range of backgrounds and interests are invited to join an ongoing crossdisciplinary investigation of and experiment in contemporary global art practice and theory.

The priority deadline for spring 2009 admission to SFAI's BFA program is December 15, 2008; the last day to apply is January 20, 2009.

The deadline for spring 2009 admission to SFAI's PB and MFA programs is November 30, 2008.

The deadline for summer 2009 admission to SFAI's Low-residency Summer MFA program is January 15, 2009.

The early action deadline for fall 2009 admission to SFAI's BFA program is November 30, 2008; thereafter, applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

The deadline for fall 2009 admission to SFAI's Post-Baccalaureate certificate program is March 1, 2009.

The deadline for fall 2009 admission to SFAI's MFA (full-time) and new dual-degree MA/MFA (History and Theory of Contemporary Art / Studio Practice) programs is January 15, 2009.

SFAI's School of Interdisciplinary Studies is motivated by the premise that critical thinking and writing, informed by an in-depth understanding of theory and practice, are essential for engaging contemporary global society. It offers degree programs in Exhibition and Museum Studies (MA only), History and Theory of Contemporary Art (BA and MA), and Urban Studies (BA and MA).
