"Chosen” is a wide ranging project that follows the plot of messianism in Polish and Israeli narratives. Artists from Poland and Israel were asked to react to the idea of messianism – religious messianism, secular messianism, false messianism, and national messianism. They were asked to relate to the ways in which messianism expresses itself in both social and political arenas.

Marxism, Nihalism, Communism, Socialism, Nazism, all are ideologies that were shaped during the modern age and acted as secular alternatives to religious messianism. At their basis stood the secular messianic passion of modern humans, wishing to shape with their own hands both this world and the next world, within this world. The modern revolutionary ideologies, including Zionism, translated ancient religious desires into secular and political terms. Religion was secularised and became history; the heavenly kingship became the human kingship.

Works in the exhibition will examine the various manifestations of contemporary messianism characterised by constant dynamism and transformation. Thus the politicization of theology, typical of the modern era, transforms into the theologization of the political that is manifested by way of the politics of religion and fundamentalism.
